Black History Month

This Black History Month, we honor more than history; and we celebrate living legacies.
Across generations, Black communities have shaped the world through courage, creativity, scholarship, and service. From scientists and storytellers to activists and innovators, Black voices have continually imagined futures that are more just, compassionate, and free.
As Mastercard Foundation Scholars at UBC, we carry this legacy forward. Our journeys are rooted in different countries, languages, and experiences, yet we share a common purpose: to learn, to lead, and to create impact in our communities. Black History Month reminds us that our presence in classrooms, laboratories, boardrooms, and communities is part of a much larger story of resilience and excellence.
Maya Angelou reminds us, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Those words reflect the spirit of so many Black leaders before us and the determination of scholars today who are transforming challenges into possibilities.
This month is also a call to action to support Black scholarship, amplify Black stories, challenge inequities, and build spaces where every young person can thrive without limits.
May we continue to rise like those who came before us, and may our work today become the history that inspires tomorrow.
Happy Black History Month ✊🏾
