Olatomide Ojajune – A Mastercard Foundation Scholar’s Reflections on the Baobab Summit 2025

Olatomide Ojajune, Mastercard Foundation Scholars’ Representative, Class of ’26
From October 16–21, I had the privilege of attending the Baobab Summit 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, and it remains one of the most inspiring experiences of my journey so far. Walking into the venue, I was immediately awed by the vibrant energy in the room. Young Africans from different countries, disciplines, and dreams all gathered with a shared desire to learn, connect, and grow. It felt like stepping into a living world of ideas and possibilities.
The Summit was filled with insightful breakout sessions and innovation labs, yet what stayed with me most were not just the presentations, but the stories. Sitting beside fellow young Africans and listening to the paths they had walked, their struggles, resilience, and hopes, touched me deeply. One statement in particular echoed in my heart: “Don’t let your background hold you to the ground.” Those words felt like a gentle push forward, a reminder that our origins shape us but do not define our limits. We can rise, grow, and show up boldly, no matter where we began.

Throughout the week, I found myself reflecting on what leadership truly means. The Summit challenged my idea of success and courage. I realized that leadership is not about having everything figured out; it is about showing up, learning continuously, and offering your best even when the road feels uncertain. I left Nairobi with a renewed commitment to approach my studies, my career, and every space I enter with greater purpose and confidence.
I am profoundly grateful to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia for making this opportunity possible. Equally, I am thankful for the incredible scholars and leaders I met, people whose kindness, brilliance, and authenticity made the experience unforgettable. They reminded me that community is one of our greatest sources of strength.

As I return to my daily life, I carry these lessons with me. I want to serve more intentionally, create more boldly, and rise above every challenge with patience and faith. If there is one message I hold close, it is this:
As Mastercard Foundation Scholars, we should not remain on the ground. Like the Baobab tree, we must rise even if it is slow. Try, even if it feels small. Your story is bigger than your beginning.
