Can you tell us a little about your background and where you’re from?

I’m from Oyam District in Northern Uganda, and I belong to the Lango Tribe. I graduated from Cornerstone Leadership Academy Boys as the top student in my district in 2018. My performance earned me a government scholarship to study Forestry, a course I wasn’t initially passionate about. However, I grew to love and appreciate its importance over time.

My involvement with the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA) was a turning point for me. I was elected to represent Southern Africa, coordinating with 11 universities. Later, in 2023, I had the honor of being elected Executive Secretary of IFSA during the 34th General Assembly in Germany.

What motivated you to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program? Was there someone or something that inspired you?

I’ve always been aware of the impact of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program in Uganda. Many of my peers had benefited from its support, and I saw how it transformed their lives. This inspired me to apply because the scholarship’s comprehensive support system would allow me to fully focus on my studies and further contribute to the forestry sector. I wanted to be part of something that empowers young scholars to make meaningful contributions.

How has the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program shaped your educational journey so far?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has made a world of difference. Before receiving it, I had significant financial stress, which impacted my focus on studies. Now, I can concentrate fully on my education, without the constant worry about finances. Additionally, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has allowed me to support my parents, which gives me peace of mind and enables me to be more productive.

At UBC, many students come from affluent backgrounds and it’s easy to feel out of place. But the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has helped me overcome feelings of low self-esteem. Now, I live comfortably and engage confidently with my peers, knowing I’m supported in my journey.

How did you first hear about the opportunity? Was the application process challenging?

I discovered the opportunity on the UBC Forestry LinkedIn page. I hadn’t yet received my official transcript, but the requirements were straightforward. Since I come from an English-speaking country, taking a language test was optional, which simplified the process.

I took my time writing compelling essays and made sure everything was in order before submitting. The process was actually enjoyable because I had the support of my referees, who were prompt in submitting their letters. I used my provisional transcript and, overall, the experience was smooth with clear communication at each step.

In what ways has the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program impacted your academic life? What have been some of your biggest accomplishments?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has given me access to invaluable resources, including mentorship, career guidance, and a global network of alumni. These connections have been instrumental in helping me plan for my professional future. One of my proudest accomplishments since receiving the scholarship has been gaining leadership experience within IFSA, a role that allows me to contribute to sustainable forestry practices across Southern Africa.

Have you faced any new challenges during your scholarship journey? How do you manage the expectations that come with being a Mastercard Foundation Scholar?

I wouldn’t say I’ve faced significant challenges, but I’ve noticed that many people seek advice from me, especially when scholarship applications open. It can be overwhelming when I get numerous requests from students across the world. But despite my busy schedule, it’s rewarding to help others. I make time to review applications because I understand the importance of paying it forward.

How has the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program influenced your career goals? What’s your biggest goal after graduation?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has helped refine my career goals by giving me the support and confidence to fully immerse myself in my studies and leadership roles. After graduation, I aim to work with international organizations focused on environmental conservation and community development.

My main goal is to contribute to sustainable forestry practices that protect the environment for future generations. I also want to secure funding for my projects back home, which are aimed at improving social welfare while safeguarding the environment.

How do you plan to give back to your community once your studies are completed?

In my community, many people generate income through unsustainable practices like charcoal burning and brick making, which degrade the land. I’m working on securing funding for ecopreneurship initiatives, providing alternative, sustainable income-generating activities that don’t harm the environment.

This approach will help improve agricultural productivity and create job opportunities while preserving our natural resources.

I believe it’s important to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to benefit my community directly.

What advice would you give to students applying for scholarships?

To students seeking scholarships, I encourage you to stay persistent and not be discouraged if the process seems long. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is incredibly supportive, and I recommend following their social media pages for the latest updates. Take your time with your essays, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

Looking back, what has been the most rewarding part of this journey? Can you share a memorable moment?

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been the sense of peace and focus I’ve gained. I can now study without the distraction of financial worries, and that has been a game-changer for me.

A memorable moment for me was when I received the call confirming that I had been awarded a scholarship through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. It was a moment of pure joy, not only for me but for my family as well. It felt like everything I had worked for was finally paying off.

If you could sum up your journey as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar in one sentence, what would it be?

It would be: “Feeling overwhelmed is normal, but giving up is not an option.” Through this journey, I’ve learned that self-doubt is natural, but perseverance is key. As long as I give my best effort, I know I’ve done everything in my power to succeed.
