My name is Samuel Adetsi, and I hold a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, graduating in 2021. I have over two years of experience as a software engineer and have always had a strong affinity for problem solving. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, I volunteered my IoT expertise to develop devices such as thermometer guns, respirators, and face shields to help combat COVID in Ghana. In the same year, I co-founded “techieCom”, an organization dedicated to mentoring students and tutoring them in technological skills like programming, electronics, IoT, and graphic design.
For my undergraduate final project, I used IoT technology to address food insecurity in Ghana’s agricultural sector. We collected farm data such as soil pH, moisture, temperature, and atmospheric conditions. This project aimed to help farmers make informed decisions, improving crop yield, reducing water wastage, and minimizing the use of herbicides and pesticides. However, I lacked the skills to draw insights from this data, leading me to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Science.
The Data Science expertise I will gain at UBC will complement my software engineering and IoT expertise, allowing me to develop innovative solutions for challenges in Ghana’s agriculture, health, and finance sectors. I am excited about UBC’s MDS program for its comprehensive nature and the diverse cultural backgrounds of my future classmates, which will enrich my experience and help me build valuable connections. Additionally, I look forward to exploring the beautiful city of Vancouver.
