Mercy Wanalo

By maya zwang on July 5, 2017

Mercy graduated from Kapsabet Girl’s High School in Kenya.  Passionate about nutrition and education, she volunteered as a nutritionist at her local hospital where she worked closely with malnourished patients especially children from her local community.  She prescribed nutritious foods to help boost their immune systems, provided advice on healthy eating habits, and worked with patients who struggled with diabetes and other nutrition-related problems.  Mercy’s long-term goal is to reduce the high infant mortality rate in her community, and she has worked to provide information to mothers from around Kenya on breastfeeding practices, encouraging them to participate and learn about the short- and long-term benefits of breastfeeding their babies and providing information on nutritious foods that they can feed their children, with the belief that knowledge is the best way to reduce the mortality rate of children less than five years of age. She hopes to establish her own NGO that will focus on providing nutrition information to mothers in a “door to door” approach to improve accessibility to health care and education, because she noticed that many mothers brought their children to the hospital when it was too late. Mercy is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Health.
