My motivation came from both personal experiences and professional goals. Seeing how economic and environmental challenges affected my community made me determined to find lasting solutions. Education and policy work became my way to create that impact. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC fit perfectly with my vision to empower young leaders and help build a better future for everyone.
How has the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program shaped your educational journey so far?
This Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has been life-changing. It allowed me to pursue the Master of Food and Resource Economics at the University of British Columbia without the stress of financial worries. It also opened doors to incredible academic resources, diverse perspectives, and a global network of Mastercard Foundation Scholars. These experiences have given me a deeper understanding of sustainable economic policies and how to apply them in my home country, Ghana.
What challenges did you face in your education before being accepted into the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC?
Financial difficulties often made it hard to stay in school, especially when my parents faced health issues. Fortunately, the support I received from family, friends, and my determination helped me push through. These struggles made me resilient and strengthened my commitment to using education to uplift others.
How did you first hear about this opportunity? What was the application process like?
I learned about the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program from my undergraduate supervisor, who encouraged me to explore further education opportunities. The application process was intense. I had to reflect on my journey, be very clear about my goals, and gather strong recommendations. It was daunting to share my story so openly, but careful planning and guidance from mentors helped me submit an application that truly represented my aspirations.

Have you faced any new challenges during your journey as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar? How have you handled them?
Adjusting to a new academic environment in Canada was a big hurdle. The coursework is rigorous, and the pace is faster than what I was used to. To cope, I sought out campus resources, joined study groups, and built a network of fellow Mastercard Foundation Scholars for support. There’s also the pressure of high expectations as a scholarship recipient, but I continue to remain focused on my ultimate goal: using my education to create tangible impacts back home.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars program has helped me see how agriculture, resource management, and economic policies intersect. I now have a clearer path toward promoting sustainable development in Ghana. After graduation, I want to become an academic in resource economics, training others to research and solve economic problems in developing countries. Additionally, I plan to address pressing issues in Ghana such as illegal mining and environmental degradation.
How do you plan to give back to your community after completing your studies?
I plan to conduct research aimed at solving economic challenges in Ghana, especially in agriculture and resource management. I will continue my work in disability advocacy to ensure people with disabilities have better access to economic opportunities. Mentoring young students is also a priority for me because I believe helping one person succeed can create a ripple effect that benefits many more.
