A Mastercard Foundation Scholar’s Journey: An Interview with Daisy Mboya

“Using my education to help others is crucial, whether through direct service, advocacy, or contributing to initiatives promoting education and sustainability.” – Daisy Mboya

Can you tell us a little about your background and where you’re from?

My sister raised me in Eldoret, Kenya, after my father’s retirement on medical grounds from 2006 until I completed high school in 2012. In 2013, I got to join the best university in Kenya, the University of Nairobi. I was lucky enough to have my eldest sister support my first year of university. During my second year on campus, financial obligations constrained my sister to a position where she could no longer help me in school. At this point, I had to start working over the weekend to get some extra cash to pay fees and keep going. I never enjoyed my time on campus because I was either working or worried about how I would get the next day’s meal. Thinking about how determined I was to get the best out of my situation, having been told that ‘education is the key to success, I can only look back and thank all those who supported and believed in my strengths.

Balance of interpersonal skills, social skills and academic skills.

Have you faced any new challenges during your scholarship journey? How do you manage the expectations of being a Mastercard Foundation Scholar?

My biggest challenge during this journey is ‘perception through the eye of an African.’ To overcome this challenge, I have sought to understand the country’s culture to adapt and thrive in this diverse, multicultural environment. As a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, I’m also expected to embody the program’s core values. Meeting this expectation has been about sharing my experiences, learning from others, and building meaningful connections.

Ultimately, I aspire to contribute positively to my community and industry. My major goal is to transition into a new role and practice most, if not all, of what I have been taught. Use the knowledge and skills acquired to solve real-world problems.
