We are thrilled to spotlight Angella Asabaawebwa, a dedicated Mastercard Foundation Scholar from Uganda. Angella joined the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program in 2018 and is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Social Justice at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Journey at UBC
Angella’s journey at UBC has been marked by academic excellence and a deep commitment to social justice. The support she has received from the Mastercard Foundation team has been instrumental in her academic, social, and personal development. “The Mastercard FoundationCF team has been very helpful in guiding me through my academic, social, and personal life,” Angella shares. “UBC is a very great campus with many resources to facilitate international students as they navigate their new place.”
Her academic highlight has been her Social Justice classes, which have expanded her understanding of herself, her country, and the world. “I have enjoyed all my classes and the discussions that are eye-opening. Through that, I have found my place in my new community,” she reflects.
Making an Impact in Vancouver
In addition to her studies, Angella assists the seasonally homeless in living independently. This role aligns with her passion for social justice and her desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Her current interest lies in exploring the concept of belonging and what it means for different people.
Future Aspirations
Angella plans to continue her education in graduate school, where she aims to deepen her knowledge of social justice and drive meaningful change in the world. Her dedication to this field is a testament to her commitment to being a catalyst for positive transformation.
Stress Management and Self-Care
Balancing academic and work responsibilities can be challenging, but Angella has adopted practices to manage stress and promote self-care. “Having conversations with other people will help you know that you are not alone. Life can be stressful sometimes, and that’s when we need to take care of ourselves. Take a walk,” she advises.
