Joseph is a research assistant from the Ashanti region of Ghana, committed to sustainability and community engagement. Graduating with First Class Honours in Environmental Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he has actively contributed through research, leadership, and volunteer work.
As a research assistant, Joseph has addressed the environmental impacts of illegal mining in Ghana. One notable project involved sampling cocoa beans and soils, analysing heavy metal contamination, and advocating for responsible mining practices. His undergraduate research on the “Effect of Rainfall and Temperature Variability on Maize Yield in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti Region, Ghana” was published in the Elsevier journal Current Research in Environmental Sustainability. This research demonstrated academic rigor and provided valuable insights, propelling community awareness and engagement.
His volunteer work with the Environmental Leadership Forum (ELF) Volunteer Program is a significant achievement. Over two years, he led public education on sustainable practices, tree planting, and clean-up exercises for plastic-polluted rivers. These activities earned him certificates of recognition and showcased his ability to drive tangible environmental improvements.
At the University of British Columbia, Joseph aims to leverage the Master of Land and Water Systems (MLWS) program to further his expertise in environmental management. He hopes to develop innovative solutions for environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable development in Ghana and beyond.
Excited about UBC’s vibrant academic environment, Joseph looks forward to collaborating with faculty and peers. He is eager to explore Vancouver’s natural beauty and cultural diversity while advancing his knowledge and making meaningful contributions to environmental sustainability.
