My name is Chinazam Elizabeth Njoku, and I am from Abia state, Nigeria, though I grew up in Lagos state. I recently graduated from the University of Port Harcourt, where I studied Forestry and Wildlife Management. People often describe me as brilliant, funny, jovial, and someone who ensures everyone feels included.
During my time at my university, I was actively involved in various organizations and initiatives. I was elected as the Financial Secretary of the Forestry and Wildlife Students Association (FORWISA), where I managed the association’s finances efficiently and transparently. One of my proudest accomplishments was organizing a successful fundraising event that significantly boosted our budget, enabling us to undertake more community projects and educational trips.
Additionally, I led the Fridays For Future climate movement in my community. As team lead, I organized climate awareness walks and collaborated with local authorities to secure permits and engage the public effectively. Under my leadership, our team increased community participation and heightened awareness about climate change and its impacts.
I am passionate about sustainable forestry practices and environmental conservation. I hope to contribute to these causes by engaging in research, policy development, and practical implementation of sustainable forest management strategies. My chosen field of study (Master of Sustainable Forest Management) at UBC aligns perfectly with these goals, as the program will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to address critical environmental challenges.
Coming to Vancouver and UBC excites me because of the opportunity to learn from leading experts in sustainable forestry and to be part of a global network of like-minded individuals. I look forward to experiencing Vancouver’s natural beauty and vibrant culture, which will undoubtedly enrich my academic journey and personal growth.
