Abdul-Suburu is a brave, enthusiastic, and generous leader dedicated to fostering the development of the next generation and a committed climate change activist from Buipe, Ghana. Inspired by his community’s natural landscapes and his grandfather, a field technician, he developed a deep curiosity for geomatics. Despite parental expectations to pursue a medical career, he followed his passion and interest to leverage Geomatics to manage climate change, earning a First-Class in Geomatic Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
In 2023, driven by the passion for mitigating climate change effect, Abdul-Suburu spearheaded a community awareness campaign for the Green Ghana Project in Buipe. He organized workshops in local schools, distributed informative pamphlets, and leveraged local media to raise awareness about deforestation and climate change. His efforts led to a 20% increase in community members actively seeking information on tree planting and the planting of an estimated 200 trees in two months.
Abdul-Suburu has decided to pursue a Master of International Forestry (MIF) to examine forestry and natural resource management from the perspectives of local people, landscapes, institutions, governance, business, and many other perspectives. Decisions regarding forest conservation and resource management are made in ever-changing landscapes today, and global agreements are being negotiated. With this understanding, He can collaborate with a range of stakeholders to find solutions for urgent global problems such as climate change.
Joining the UBC and Vancouver community excites Abdul-Suburu, who looks forward to learning from distinguished faculty such as Professors Terry Sunderland and Peter Wood.
